My Ireland - Anna Geary - Best of Ireland
What’s your favourite thing about Ireland?
I know a popular answer to this question is “the people” and of course that is true, but what I love about the people is the little idiosyncrasies that differ from county to county. Our accents, how we phrase things, our mannerisms. For such a small island, it’s such a mixed bag and I love that!
Your favourite Irish town?
I don’t have a particular favourite. But I’m always drawn back to Cork, places like Clonakilty, with Inchydoney beach nearby. It will always be the real capital in my eyes, even though my Dublin husband would beg to differ.
Best view in Ireland?
Glendalough is up there as one of my favourite views. The Spinc Walk was also one of the first dates I went on with Kev. He didn’t tell me how long it was going to take to get up to the top though. I wasn’t mentally prepared! But the views were worth it and we’ve been there multiple times since (with snacks!)
The Spinc WalkYour favourite restaurant?
Lock 13 in Sallins gets the nod from me. With a small baby, we aren’t venturing far these days, but we don’t need to. Lock 13 have a delicious menu, their own brewery and great staff. Their Sunday roast and potato skins get top marks.
Best bar in Ireland?
This is a tough one. Dick Macs will always hold a special place in my heart because I had my hen back in Dingle!
Best weekend retreat?
Lahinch is a great spot to recharge – beach walks, Spooney’s ice cream and salty chips.
What’s your favourite place to swim?
I’m not really into sea swimming (am I the only one left who doesn’t sea swim?), but Clahane, Liscannor in Co Clare was so inviting, I was coaxed into the water. It’s a hidden gem.

Favourite Irish building?
Croke Park. It’s steeped in history and I have so many amazing memories from my camogie playing days there. Walking up the steps of the Hogan Stand to lift the O’Duffy cup as an All Ireland winning captain of Cork was one of the best days of my life. Try the Croke Park Skyline Tour to see it from a different view point.
What do you recommend to tourists?
Lose yourself in West Cork. Sample the local produce, explore the local sights, and experience the local humour and warmth. You’ll have to drag yourself away. The Beara Peninsula, Bantry, Schull, Mizen Head, Baltimore, Skibbereen, Allhies, to name but a few, are all great. You’ll be spoiled for choice.
