Dublin Rose presents Hot Press with Men's Fair Play Cup at 16th annual World Refugee Day Fair Play Football Cup
Since 2001, World Refugee Day has been held every year on June 20 to celebrate nearly 120 million people who are forced to flee their homes due to war or persecution.
Dublin Rose Suad Mooge presented Hot Press with the Men’s Fair Play Cup at the 16th annual World Refugee Day Fair Play Football Cup.
Hot Press captain, Brazilian striker Danilo Socco, was one of the scorers in the final, making it a 3-1 win to clinch the side's second title.
Other teams to feature in the tournament included Second Captains, Kilkenny Tigers, Wadajir Somali Association, Vietnam, Gorillas, Carnbeg, DZ Algeria, The BANNEDits and SARI.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ireland (UNHCR) and Sport Against Racism Ireland (SARI) launched the annual Refugee Week Ireland with the event.
The Fair Play Cup featured 16 men's and four women's 7-a-side teams from refugee and community groups, accommodation centres, NGOs, members of the media and Bohemians Ballymun FC. Over 150 players from over 25 different countries, including Somalia, Vietnam, India, South Sudan and Ireland, competed in the tournament.
"Today's tournament is a celebration of refugees," said Mooge, who will be representing Dublin in the Rose of Tralee this August.
"Today goes beyond the pitch - it hosts communities and reminds everyone that talent and resilience have no borders. Despite everything, the love of the game remains unbreakable."
"It is especially important that Sport Against Racism Ireland's Fair Play Cup took place this year as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Refugee Convention," said Maria Hennessy, UNHCR Government Liaison Officer.
"The right to seek safety is a lifeline, one that is made for times like these. At its heart is a message brought to life by the Fair Play Cup, that asylum is much more than physical security, it is also the opportunity to participate, to feel part of a community and to rebuild lives."
The event kicks off a series of initiatives to mark Refugee Week Ireland. More information is available here.
