The Shows Must Go On - November's best TV: The Death of Bunny Munro, Pluribus, The Beast In Me and more
From Nick Cave-inspired dramedy and Cold War criminal capers to bonkers sci-fi yarns and nasty neighbour nailbiters, STUART CLARK will be glued to his TV this month.
THE DEATH OF BUNNY MUNRO (Sky Atlantic)
From the makers of Baby Reindeer and The End Of The F***ing World comes this deft adaptation of Nick Cave’s novel about a sex-addicted travelling salesman. As excellent as Matt Smith is in the title role, it’s his screen son Rafael Mathé who routinely steals the scenes. Set in Brighton and accompanied by a killer soundtrack, this fair gladdens the heart.
THE BEAST IN ME (Netflix)
We’d happily watch Claire Danes sitting still for an hour, so to have her star in a thriller about a famous author whose life is turned upside down – and not in a good way – by her new neighbour is brilliant. With Danes and her buddy Jodie Foster among the producers, it’s superior fare, with The Americans star Matthew Evans wonderfully loathsome as the bad guy on the other side of the garden fence.
The Beast In MeTHE ROOTS OF THE EVIL (Walter Presents @ Channel4.com)
Set in 1993, this pitch-black thriller finds two detectives from opposite sides of the Berlin Wall investigating the ritualistic killing of a young girl. Already a big hit at home, the six-parter’s attention to historical detail is impressive, ditto Henriette Confurius and Fahri Yardim’s performances, as mutual suspicion is overcome and a special bond forged.
PLURIBUS (Apple TV)
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul creator Vince Gilligan strikes TV gold again with this sci-fi romp about Carol Sturka, the only person immune to an unexplained virus that transforms the world’s population into content and optimistic citizens. It sounds bonkers and frequently is, with Deborah Seahorn, AKA Better Call’s Kim Wexler, playing the lead and enjoying herself immensely.
