Sally Rooney's Conversations With Friends TV adaptation will see Lenny Abrahamson return as director

The televised production on Sally Rooney's debut novel Conversations With Friends is heating up fast, with Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson returning to the helm alongside Hulu and BBC streaming services.

Writer Alice Birch will once again adapt Rooney's work for the screen, with the author also acting as an executive producer on the series.

According to Deadline, Hulu has given a straight-to-series order for the 12-episode show.

The BBC committed to Conversations with Friends back in in February - two months before Normal People (and Connell's chain) became a global phenomenon.

Ed Guiney, director of Dublin-based company Element Pictures, revealed that the BBC was working on an adaptation of Conversations with Friends.

"We loved working with Hulu on Normal People – they are an inspiring and very talented team and all of us at Element are delighted to be partnering with them again, alongside our friends at the BBC, on the screen adaptation of Sally Rooney's incredible first novel."

The show will follow 21-year-old Francis, an observant and cool-headed Trinity student of English Literature.

"A student in Dublin and an aspiring writer, at night she performs spoken word with her best friend Bobbi, who used to be her girlfriend," a description for the show reads.

"When they are interviewed and then befriended by Melissa, a well-known journalist who is married to Nick, an actor, they enter a world of beautiful houses, raucous dinner parties and holidays in Provence, beginning a complex ménage-à-quatre.

"But when Frances and Nick get unexpectedly closer, the sharply witty and emotion-averse Frances is forced to honestly confront her own vulnerabilities for the first time."
