New documentary shines spotlight on Sands family
Tommy Sands – Clann an Cheoil airs Tuesday, December 30, on RTÉ One at 6.30pm and will also be available on the RTÉ Player.
A new documentary, Tommy Sands – Clann an Cheoil, is set to air this month. The film will offer an intimate portrait of the Sands family, whose music and activism have resonated all over the country.
Tommy Sands and his siblings grew up surrounded by music and storytelling in their home in County Down near Mayobridge. Their family house became a rare space where Catholics and Protestants came together to share tunes and tales, united by a shared love of music. Those early days in their “Céilí House” set the foundation for a career that would eventually take them to some of the world’s most celebrated stages.
The film follows a journey back to their roots, featuring performances and anecdotes from the Sands’ extended family. It also focuses on the remarkable impact of Tommy Sands, often called “The Bard of Peace,” whose songwriting and social activism earned widespread recognition. Admired by figures such as Pete Seeger and Seamus Heaney, Sands was coined as “the most powerful songwriter in Ireland, if not the rest of the world.”
Interviews with Arlo Guthrie, political figures, civil rights activists, journalists, and fellow musicians will appear to discuss the family’s influence during the Troubles and their commitment to peace-building through music and storytelling.
Tommy Sands – Clann an Cheoil airs Tuesday, December 30, on RTÉ One at 6.30pm and will also be available on the RTÉ Player.
