Netflix has released the trailer of the upcoming documentary The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel.
The Netflix documentary focuses on one of the founding members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hillel Slovak, who was the original guitarist of the band.
Even though he had co-written five songs for the band's debut album, Slovak was not involved in the recording of the record. During that time, he was dedicated to the rock band he had formed in high school, What is This?.
The Israeli-American musician then rejoined the Red Hot Chili Peppers, recording two albums with them, Freaky Styley (1985) and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987).
Slovak then died due to an overdose on June 25 1988, aged 26.
Said to explore the band's early days in the LA music scene and their deep bond, the documentary features Hillel Slovak's journal entries, unseen archival footage and interviews of current band members Flea, Anthony Kiedis, and John Frusciante.
Former Red Hot Chili Peppers member Jack Irons, Eleven's Alain Johannes and one of the foremost innovators of funk, George Clinton, are also set to appear in the Netflix special.
Despite the participation of the current members of the group, Red Hot Chili Peppers recently took to Instagram to distance themselves from the project.
"Dear people of the universe, about a year ago, we were asked to be interviewed for a documentary about Hillel Slovak," wrote the band. "He was a founding member of the group, a great guitarist, and a friend.
"We agreed to be interviewed out of love and respect for Hillel and his memory. However, this documentary is now being advertised as a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary, which it is not. We had nothing to do with it creatively. We have yet to make a Red Hot Chili Peppers documentary.
"The central subject of this current Netflix special is Hillel Slovak and we hope it sparks interest in him and his work."
The documentary will premiere on March 13 at SXSW before being available on Netflix on March 20.
