Marian Price files for defamation against Disney+ over Say Nothing Jean McConville murder scene
Price was depicted firing the shots that killed McConville in the series, despite her denial of the murder
Veteran Republican Marian Price has filed legal action against Disney+ for defamation after the series Say Nothing depicted her killing Jean McConville.
She is being represented by the Belfast law firm Phoenix Law, best known for representing the families of victims of the Stardust tragedy, and the band Kneecap in various legal battles.
Released in November last year, Say Nothing is based on a book of the same name written by Patrick Radden Keefe, and exploring the life of IRA member Dolours Price, Marian’s sister, and the disappearance of Jean McConville.
Mrs McConville was abducted, murdered and secretly buried by the IRA in 1972, becoming one of the disappeared. Her body was eventually found in 2003 at a beach in County Louth in the Republic of Ireland.
Dolours Price died in 2013 and had admitted to being involved in the murder, although Marian Price, also known as Marian McGlinchey, has always denied killing McConville.
In Say Nothing, Marian is depicted as firing the shots that killed McConville. Peter Corrigan, Marian Price’s legal representative, previously called the depiction an “unfounded” and “damaging” allegation, and that the scene was created for “the purposes of theatrical elaboration”.
The allegations, he said last November, are not only “unjustified, they are odious insofar as they seek to cause our client immeasurable harm in exchange for greater streaming success”.
“Our client has now been forced to initiate legal proceedings to hold Disney to account for their actions,” he said.
Nobody has ever been charged with McConville’s killing.
