Jenna Ortega quits Scream VII after Melissa Barrera was fired from the project
Jenna Ortega has decided to walk away from Scream VII after Spyglass Entertainment fired her co-star Melissa Barrera – sources insist that Ortega’s departure has nothing to do with her on-screen sister's firing.
Only a day after news broke about Melissa Barrera being fired from Scream VII, it has been revealed that Wednesday star, Jenna Ortega will not be returning to the franchise either.
Barrera was very vocal about her stance on the current conflict in Gaza. The actress has posted regularly on Instagram about the conflict, sharing a post that accused Israel of "genocide and ethnic cleansing".
She Stated : "I too come from a colonized country" alongside a Mexican flag emoji – as well as "Palestine WILL be free", followed by a Palestinian flag. She concluded the Story with the quote: "They tried to bury us, they didn't know we were seeds." After these posts Spyglass cut ties with the actor.
When speaking to Variety, a spokesperson for the production company stated: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
In a now deleted post on X, filmmaker Christopher Landon, who was set to take over directing duties on Scream VII, stated after Bererra's firing – “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make”
As far as Jenna Ortega's exit goes, sources say representatives for her informed Spyglass before to the actors strike that she would not be returning. Allegedly the actress either had no deal or, in the renegotiating of her option, asked what the movie company deemed was too much money.
