Jack Black confirms School of Rock reunion to mark 20th anniversary
“It’s definitely the highlight of my career," said Jack Black in discussion of the film.
Jack Black has confirmed his intention to reunite with the cast of School of Rock for the film's 20th anniversary this September.
The 2003 hit film followed struggling rock guitarist Dewey Finn (played by Black), who posed as a substitute teacher after being fired from his own band.
After finding musical talent in his fourth-grade class– which included a student played by Miranda Cosgrove– Dewey formed a makeshift band of child musicians, which he hoped would win the prize money at the town's Battle of the Bands competition, allowing the down-on-his-luck teacher to use the money to pay rent.
A still from the film.Since the film predominantly took place in a fourth-grade classroom, the cast was primarily made of up children.
"All those kids - dig this - they were 10 years old when we made that movie and now they're all, like, 30," Black told the Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet for his forthcoming film The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
"We're gonna get together and have a 20-year anniversary. We like to jam. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the grownups from School of Rock." Black then added that he will “100 percent” share photos of the upcoming reunion to his social media.
For years there had been rumours about a sequel to the film, though School of Rock 2 has never seemed to get its footing. In 2008, Black said that he was open to returning to the franchise– and that there was even a written screenplay– but the project never came to fruition.
“My best memories are just that group of kids, and how funny and great they were,” Black told Entertainment Tonight in April. “It’s definitely the highlight of my career, I can say that. Honestly.”
While there was never a sequel made, the movie spawned a Broadway musical and a Nickelodeon series. Audiences can also look forward to the September reunion.
