Derry Girls gets BAFTA nomination

Following the runaway success of Derry Girls' first season last year, the comedy show - which depicts the lives of teenagers growing up in wartorn Derry with startling accuracy - has received a BAFTA nod for Best Scripted Comedy.

Reacting to the news, Nicola Coughlan (who plays Clare on the show), said on Twitter: "Aaaaaaaaaaa!!!! We only went and got nominated for a BAFTA didn’t we?!!!!", while creator Lisa McGee went with the slightly less effusive "Yay! X".

The show is up against the likes of Mum, Sally4ever and Stath Lets Flats in the Scripted Comedy category.

Elsewhere in the BAFTAs this year, Killing Eve leads the nominations, with 14 in total. It will go up for the prestigious best drama award against Informer, the counter-terror series about a British-Asian man tasked with spying on extremists, Save Me, a 'missing-daughter' drama also starring Suranne Jones, and the ratings heavyweight Bodyguard.

Ant and Dec have been nominated for best entertainment performance for Saturday Night Takeaway, despite Ant stepping down from presenting the show following his arrest for drink-driving.

In the current affairs category, Channel 4's Massacre at Ballymurphy, which reconstructed the events of August 9 and 11 in west Belfast in 1971, has received a nomination.

The TV Bafta awards will take place on Sunday 12 May.
