Dave Grohl Announces New Documentary
Dave Grohl has just announced the release date his two-part mini documentary “Play” which will air next week.
The frontman of the Foo Fighters just finished up another massive leg of his band’s “Concrete and Gold Tour” with a double header at Wrigley Field that amassed over 75,000 fans. His new film will be released on August 10.
Part one of the documentary focuses around the rewards and challenges of dedicating one’s life to music. It delves into the dedication required to master an instrument and the lifelong relationship a musician forges with their tool.
The second portion of the film records a remarkable 23-minute one-man-band performance featuring Grohl and seven instruments. He moves from the drums, to the bass, guitar, key and more, playing each portion purely by memory. Every time Grohl made even the slightest mistake, he’d restart the take until it was absolutely perfect. The challenges he faced in creating this masterpiece mirror those which music students face each day.
“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out. And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned,” Grohl said.
An online interactive portion was also created, allowing viewers to watch the ensemble as a whole or each instrument individually.
