Buffy the Vampire Slayer to return with upcoming reboot
Sarah Michelle Gellar may be reprising her role as Buffy Summers in a new sequel series.
A sequel to the Emmy award-winning Buffy the Vampire Slayer is in the early stages of production, as reported by Deadline.
The TV series, which ran from 1997 to 2003, is approaching a pilot order at Hulu, sources suggest. Star of the original series, Sarah Michelle Gellar, is expected to return to the series, despite previously opposing the idea.
“It’s funny, I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said in December 2024 on The Drew Barrymore Show.
“But watching Sex and the City and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe,’” Gellar continued.
The pilot is set to be directed by Oscar-winning Chloé Zhao and written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. The three will executive produce the series alongside Gellar, and the original producers Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kazui, and Dolly Parton.
“No, it could be anything. It’s a universe,” Sarah Michelle Gellar said, when asked if a potential new series would be a prequel. “And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.
Joss Whedon, who created the series, is not involved, sources say. Since allegations of misconduct against Whedon in 2021, he has not worked on any Hollywood productions.
