WATCH: the first trailer for Victoria and Abdul has arrived
The film describes the development of a surprising friendship between a monarch and a commoner.
The 81-year-old Queen of England (Judi Dench) is bored of traditions and the English court, her closest friends have died and people are basically waiting for her to do the same.
Abdul Karim has traveled from India to England to deliver a golden coin to her majesty. When the two of them meet, he gets the favor of the queen and they become friends. As their friendship strengthens, the queen rediscovers meaning and enjoyment in her life.

Victoria and Abdul is released September 8 in the UK, followed by the U.S. September 2.
