Warner Bros. have now announced a March 2023 release date for the origin movie - simply titled 'Wonka'.
While the Willy Wonka prequel has officially been in the works for many months, fans are only now receiving the latest casting updates - with Dune actor Timothée Chalamet and Spider-Man star Tom Holland reportedly in the running to play the quirky character.
As per Collider's report, the film will be released on March 17th, 2023 and will be helmed by Paddington director Paul King. Harry Potter producer David Heyman will be jumping onboard.
News of a Willy Wonka prequel first came to light back in 2018, with Ryan Gosling, Donald Glover and Ezra Miller being considered to play the title role. As of this week, Call Me By Your Name actor Timothée Chalamet and Tom Holland are being considered to play the younger version of the chocolatier.
Plot details for the new film are being kept under wraps for now.
In Tim Burton’s 2015 version of the flick, Wonka’s father was a dentist who hated sweets, and the chocolatier was portrayed as more of a recluse than in the original Gene Wilder classic.
