Shamtown music show inspired by The Saw Doctors sells out
The initial run of ten performances of Shamtown, written by Saw Doctors' manager Ollie Jennings, sold out, which led to more dates being added.
All 18 shows of Shamtown have sold out.
The new music show inspired by the music and story of The Saw Doctors is set to take to the stage in Galway this November.
Shamtown will run at the Mick Lally Theatre from November 15-29. The production will be directed by Andrew Flynn, with musical direction from Carl Kennedy.
According to its synopsis, it tells the story of how a gang of unlikely lads from Tuam, County Galway, captured the nation's heart. Set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the musical incorporates the band's hit songs such as 'N17' and 'Red Cortina' to tell the story of the Tuam music and arts scene. It culminates in their homecoming at the 1991 West's Awake festival in Tuam Stadium.
The show also features the music of Blade X members Paul Cunniffe and Padraig Stevens.
Cunniffe wrote the first version of The Saw Doctors' No.1 single, 'I Uesta Lover', and the track 'Funny World ', which is covered by the band on their album The Cure.
Stevens is best known for his work with the band with whom he has recorded and toured extensively. He is also a co-writer of 'I Uesta Lover', as well as hit songs including 'Still the Only One' and 'That's What She Said Last Night'.
The production also portrays cultural landmarks including Macnas Theatre Company in Galway and the recording of The Waterboys' Fisherman's Blues in An Spidéal; it has received support from Galway City Council Arts Office, the Town Hall Theatre Patron Scheme as well as an Agility Award from the Arts Council.
