DreamWorks' Ghost in the Shell Gets Its First Teasers
One of Japan's biggest anime is going live action.
We’re finally getting our first footage of the live action Ghost in the Shell movie, courtesy of DreamWorks Pictures. Originally a manga, or Japanese comic book, the setting and characters were famously brought to the big screen as an animated feature for adults. That film has become a cult classic, and famously provided inspiration for The Matrix films. It then went on to have its own show, another movie, a movie for the show, and a series of reboot movies.
The new live action film has stirred up controversy for casting Scarlett Johansson for the lead role. As an adaptation to a well known Japanese franchise, fans were hoping that Hollywood would have the decency to use a Japanese actress instead of a white one. The studio has been criticized for whitewashing. On the other hand, Japanese fans have expressed surprise over the controversy, many already expecting that a white actress would be cast. There’s no perfect answer to this. Regardless, the full cast will feature people of many ethnicities and nationalities.
Ghost in the Shell is a cyberpunk story where cyborgs and human/machine interfaces blur the line between humanity and technology. The main characters form Section 9, a spec-ops team that exists to thwart cyber terrorists in a future where the nature of crime has evolved with the development of cutting edge technology.
One YouTuber has kindly compiled the new Ghost in the Shell teaser trailers in a single video. Watch it here.
