Hot Press is thrilled to be teaming up with Sarah McKenna, to offer you the chance to win a beautiful framed tile from her collection, entitled 'May Your Home Never Be Big Enough For All Your Friends' – worth €95.
Sarah McKenna has been creating her unique handmade Irish pottery for over 20 years in Bridge Street Studios, Dundalk. Located on the top floor of a 250-year-old grain store, Sarah shares the studio with seven other artists, designers and craftspeople. Her work is all about layering textures, text and simple images to create memories, sentiments and nostalgia to transform an everyday object into something special as a gift.
'May Your Home Never Be Big Enough For All Your Friends' is a handmade ceramic tile impressed with a lacy pattern, adorned with a simple line drawing of a house with a bright red glossy heart at the centre of the home.
The tiles, which are textured with wallpaper patterns, are formed from flat pieces of clay, in a simple white wooden frame with no glass, to allow the ceramic tile texture to be seen and touched.
“I love to use a line or quote that strikes a happy chord in your memory," Sarah tells us. "The phrases I’ve chosen for the ‘Home Comforts’ range are those we’d hear throughout Ireland and some farther afield… However they do feel intrinsically linked to my home.”
All the pieces are individually handmade in Dundalk.
“It is important to me that the impact my work makes on the planet is as low as it can be," she adds. "I now have fully plastic-free and recyclable packaging and use as many recycled components as possible. Each package is completed with a drawing of a motif from my designs."
