Sound Of The Pirates Volume 2
Although it may sound a little bit daft to our ears, garage is the biggest ‘fing’ in Ingerland at the mo.
Although it may sound a little bit daft to our ears, garage is the biggest ‘fing’ in Ingerland at the mo. Here, sometime Gorillaz collaborator (we can forgive him for that) Ed Case and his MC troupe bring us up to speed on what’s hot and what’s not. So what’s hot? Basslines, lots of basslines. Underground garage is slowly mutating from the skippy beats and shiny vocals of yore to something approaching slowed down drum and bass – but with a little bit more going on – Jammin aka DJ Zinc’s lethal ‘Kinda Funky’ is a case in point. The girly garage crew still get a look in with Todd Edwards’ ‘Save My Life’ and Sticky and Miss Dynmite’s annoying ‘Boo!’. And Ed Case’s re-rub of Gorillaz’s ‘Clint Eastwood’ will either make you dance or have you running for the hills. Overall, the mix is smoother than a lot of garage DJs’ rough and ready approach, and the MCs – a vital component of any ‘garridge’ jam – are used sparingly and effectively. A good introduction to a sound that’s unlikely to move beyond our next door neighbours’ shores.
