So-called terrorist "spotters" will mingle with the crowd at the sold-out concert in Croke Park next month to keep a look-out for potential suicide bombers.
These new security measures, which include "plain clothes" Garda on the look-out for anyone suspicious at the concert, was obviously prompted by the horrific Manchester Arena attack that took place at the Ariana Grande concert last month. The tragic event resulted in the loss of 22 lives, with an additional 59 people injured by the homemade bomb.
Speaking exclusively in the Irish Sun this morning, Inspector Anthony Gallagher, who helps oversees the security operations for major events in Dublin, said: "Our planning for major events is very robust and we are constantly looking at new developments, trends and threats. Our spotters will have the freedom to observe what’s around them and report back any suspicious activity.
"We will have an adequate number of spotters to identify a number of risks and this will be their only role on the day. It’s important the general public know that we have confidence in our plans."
Gallagher also provided an update, saying: “Talks have been given to us by the Emergency Response Unit and we have also worked closely with our European counterparts. We will leave no stone unturned in protecting people, and they shouldn’t be in fear of attending a concert.
“Croke Park is located in an area being patrolled by the Armed Response Unit due to the Kinahan and Hutch feud. Perhaps they should be the norm now because they have the training to respond to armed incidents, including those of a terrorist nature.”
These Gardaí officers may also replace general security for the All-Ireland finals in September.
