Dia Dhuit
?A charming little rapper with flows whiter than Casper?? With these words, 18-year-old Dubliner Alex Chiedu went from total unknown to being hailed as the most exciting young musical innovator on the web, and literally overnight. Within hours of the premiere of the aptly-titled ?Dia Dhuit‘, Chiedu aka Lecs Luther had become the most hype-loaded newcomer in Irish music, and probably in non-Stateside hip-hop. It took just a week for Luther to rack up 40,000 views on YouTube for the ?Jesus?-directed video for ?Dia Dhuit‘, but of course, with swift success inevitably comes a deranged crew of internet haters, in this case whining that Luther articulates in a fine American drawl as opposed to his everyday Dublin accent. Alright, basement-dwellers, but so does Imelda May, Fionn Regan, Bono, Van Morrison, and pretty much every Irish musician ever to squeak out a lyric, and nobody breaks their balls over it. In fact, music lovers should be all but foaming at the mouth for Luther‘s forthcoming EP Fish And Chips, which is already shaping up to be the most important release in Irish hip-hop history. Comparisons to the mysterious MF Doom and Odd Future‘s Earl Sweatshirt are somewhat founded, while fans of Madlib, Q-Tip and Common will undoubtedly take a shine to this young lad‘s groove. ?Don‘t even want fame or any of that bullshit,? he writes in his Tumblr profile. ?Fraid there‘s nothing we can do about that, Lecs.
