US midterm election results in democratic congressional majority
Donald Trump said he was "absolutely willing to accept" the results, which include widespread wins for Democrats in the House, Senate, and governor races.
The Democratic Party has won a majority of the seats in both the House of Representatives and Senate, following Tuesday's election. The outcome is widely being interpreted as Americans displaying their dissatisfaction with President Trump halfway through his second term; Stephen King called it "[b]uyers' remorse".
"It’s Republicans who are so mad they’re not coming out", said Chellie Pingree, a Representative from Maine, of the cause behind Democrats' sweeping wins.
"Independents who are voting for Democrats and people who are just saying we’ve got to have some change in our country, and the Republicans haven’t been fighting back. So we’re seeing a real repudiation of the President and the Republicans who’ve gone along with him".
The party in power often performs poorly in midterm elections, but this 'blue wave' is also driven by anger over Trump's policies.
Especially unpopular are the war in Iran, his tariff wars amid the rising cost of living, and the demolition of the White House's East Wing to build a ballroom.
Although not every race has been called, control of both the House and Senate has been secured by Democrats. The two bodies together make up Congress, which can write laws, determine federal spending, declare war, and impeach the President, among other powers.
"You did it, we did it, this is redemption time", said actor John Leguizamo. "It's time to fix this mess."
Oscar winner Viola Davis congratulated Keisha Lance Bottoms on becoming governor of Georgia, the first Black woman to hold the position in any state.
36 states elected governors on Tuesday, with Democrats flipping five states and winning races in a total of 21.
Democratic candidates have so far won 236 of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, well past the 218 needed for a majority.
"[T]he American people have changed the course of our country", said Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat and former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The Speaker serves as tie-breaker in House votes and is third in line for the Presidency, behind the Vice President.
"With tremendous personal pride, I congratulate our next Speaker, Hakeem Jeffries", Pelosi continued. "Exactly twenty years after I became the first woman to hold the gavel, he will make history as the first Black Speaker of the House."
Meanwhile, Democrats have won 20 of the 35 Senate seats that were up for election, flipping Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Maine. Senate races in Mississippi and Alaska are still too close to call, but the confirmed wins bring Democrats' total up to 54 seats in the 100-seat chamber.
Fears that Trump might question or protest the results were laid to rest this morning.
"We'll probably work something out", he told the New York Times of managing the next two years of his presidency with a Democrat majority in Congress.
