Pope Leo XIV has cancerous tumour removed
According to an official statement, the operation was successful and there were no complications.
Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung cancer on Tuesday after the surgical removal of part of his lung. He is reportedly recovering normally.
At a recent health checkup, a lump was noticed which has turned out to be a common form of lung cancer, adenocarcinoma. Its removal was the first significant medical procedure in the 71-year-old's papacy.
"The Holy Father was in the operating theatre for approximately three hours; the operation itself lasted about ninety minutes. The operation was successful and there were no complications", read a statment by the Holy See Press Office.
"Following the operation, the Pope woke up normally and, after a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the tenth floor."
