Album Review: Georgia, 'Seeking Thrills'
Carefree dance music from London DJ
In the five years since Georgia’s debut album, the London-born DJ has been through some changes. She’s quit alcohol and gone vegan. More importantly, she’s got heavily into club culture.
She sees the dancefloor, now, as a spiritual realm, existing outside the normal plane of reality. No song on Seeking Thrills captures this better than the anthemic ‘About Work The Dancefloor’, inspired by Berlin club music. I am reminded of the Robyn classic ‘Dancing On My Own’.
The pounding basslines on tracks like ‘The Thrill’ and the stripped-down ‘Mellow’ – the latter featuring fellow London DJ Shygirl – are potential floor-fillers. On ‘Feel It,’ she shifts toward a futuristic pop sound, with screams and thumping synths giving it a mildly chaotic push.
Generally, Georgia’s fusion of electro-pop with vintage Chicago house and Detroit techno, makes for a refreshingly euphoric and danceable record. But not always. A track like ’24 Hours’ – catchy and pleasant – ultimately feels a bit empty. This is good, but you sense that she has a better album in her.
