Album Review: Beach House - 'Once Twice Melody'
Entrancing effort from Baltimore-based duo.
Nobody does it like Beach House. Whether on Teen Dream or Depression Cherry – or indeed any of their seven albums to date – they have created a hallmark cocktail of nostalgia and yearning. Now, with Once Twice Melody, they’ve done it again. Chock-full of Victoria Legrand’s airy vocals, complex instrumentation and heart-breaking lyrics, it’s a record to lose yourself in.
Whether it be the swirling dreamscape of ‘Runaway’ or the intense ‘Pink Funeral’, the musicians don’t put a foot wrong. Throughout, Beach House display impressive attention to sonic detail, especially on the powerful ‘Superstar’ – the album’s standout moment. Once Twice Melody has all you could ask and more from a Beach House album: catchy melodies, high drama and a marvellous sound. One to savour.
Listen: 'Superstar'
8/10
Once Twice Melody is now via Bella Union/Gilded.
