One thing’s for sure: the debut release from singer-songwriter Jenny Lindfors, When The Night Time Comes, makes no attempt to grab you by the scruff of the neck. On the contrary, for the most part, the album ambles along more or less harmlessly. Herein lies at least part of the problem. On first listen, you walk away from this record barely remembering you’ve listened to it.
When The Night Time Comes is essentially folky – it sounds at times like early Gemma Hayes. And it could be a grower: the songs blend together well and the overall theme of the album works. But, having lived with it just a little, there still seems to be a repetitive quality to the material – and a lack of the kind of distinctive arrangements that might afford it the light and shade that is essential to sustaining interest over forty minutes or so.
There is potential in evidence: Lindfors’ voice is sweet and songs like ‘Voodoo’, ‘2 x 1’ and the title-track have a catchy quality. But overall, When The Night Time Comes is a case of a lot done, more to do.
