Set in post-war Australia, Fassbender and Vikander play a married couple who love each other dearly but are constantly in grievance due to their inability to have children. One day though, their prayers seem to have been heard when a baby washes ashore on a boat. The pair face a moral dilemma over whether to keep the baby somewhat selfishly or bring it back to the mainland to find its parents. Eventually they decide to raise the child as their own. However after years of living content as a family, devastation erupts when secrets about the child's family emerge.
