Twitter Interview: Ghostpoet
Hey Ghostpoet, what's the story?
@hotpress: Hey Ghostpoet, what’s the story?
@ghostpoet: Nothing much. The story has still to be written, the day has just begun.
@hotpress: We should apologise for tearing you away from Grand Theft Auto V…
@ghostpoet: I haven’t opened it yet! I was resisting for a very long time. I told my missus that I wouldn’t buy it until Christmas but...
@hotpress: Whoops…
@ghostpoet: I feel like I should keep it in its wrapping until I finish my various projects. I’m going to try my best, but we’ll see what happens.
@hotpress: Good luck with that. Some Say I So I Say Light has been out for six months. How do you feel about it now?
@ghostpoet: I didn’t really feel the whole ‘difficult second record’ thing. It feels like I’m here now, and I can do other projects and be an artist.
@hotpress: The ‘difficult second album’ thing is a bit of a myth at this stage, no?
@ghostpoet: You evolve. It’s a learning curve. The first record should give you a better idea of who you want to be when the second one comes around.
@hotpress: You’re not too fond of genres. What’s the most infuriating description of yourself that you’ve seen?
@ghostpoet: I don’t get infuriated, I laugh. I know who I am; which is everything and nothing. It doesn’t matter what people want to call me.
@hotpress: You moved from the bedroom to the studio. Is that going to be your permanent home?
@ghostpoet: I’ve obtained quite a bit of analogue equipment, which makes up my home studio/bedroom/thing. I think I’ll go back to that, just in a different way.
@hotpress: Sounds cosy.
@ghostpoet: Well, I’m closer to my PS3, so I can play Grand Theft Auto…
@hotpress: Touché! You’re a former Mercury Prize nominee…
@ghostpoet: I am!
@hotpress: Kevin Shields criticised the competition from an independent artist POV, but you could argue that Ghostpoet was independent when nominated…
@ghostpoet: I agree, I agree.
@hotpress: As an independent artist at the time, was the experience beneficial for you?
@ghostpoet: It put my music into the ears of people who may never have come across it. That’s the beauty of something like the Mercury Prize; the exposure.
@hotpress: Were you gutted not to win?
@ghostpoet: I didn’t want to win it, to be honest. It was more about using the nomination to my advantage. It opened doors for me.
Ghostpoet plays The Button Factory on October 25
