Twenty:Twelve
There are a number of stand-out tracks – but as a whole, the wide-range of styles (jazzy, loungy, tracky, housey, filtery, breaky, Detroity... confused yet?) just don’t gel.
Tenth and Parker aim for ‘jack of all trades’ territory with this 14-track debut, but, like far too many others before ‘em, end up as masters of none. That’s not to say that Twenty:Twelve is completely pointless – there are a number of stand-out tracks – but as a whole, the wide-range of styles (jazzy, loungy, tracky, housey, filtery, breaky, Detroity... confused yet?) just don’t gel.
The use of beat poet type Mark Murphy works well on the intro and ‘Kool Down’ and not very well after that - check the recent single ‘Millenium Riddle Song’. Uppers include ‘Superstar’ (featuring Snowboy on percussion), ‘Love Almighty’, ‘Mr Oates’ and ‘Warm and Mellow’, while ‘Mirage’ and ‘Biggie 50’ are the definite downers.
More hit than miss, but definitely too over-ambitious.
