The Saw Doctors' 'Green and Red of Mayo' reaches No.1 on Spotify's Irish chart
The Mayo team were crowned All Ireland Football Champions for the first time in 75 years on Sunday.
The Saw Doctors have made the No.1 spot on Spotify’s most-played tracks in Ireland with their song ‘Green and Red of Mayo.’
The news comes after the Mayo team were crowned All Ireland Football Champions on Sunday in Croke Park.
This marks the first time since the song’s release in 1992 that the song has reached the No. 1 spot. It is also the end of the 75-year ‘curse’ for Mayo – the first time they’ve won since 1951.
An average of 944,000 viewers tuned in to watch the historic win on RTÉ Player. The peak minute had 1.1 million viewers.
‘Green and Red of Mayo’ was written in 1990 after the band had played a festival on Clare Island, off Mayo.
“It was beautiful weather, a cloudless, warm sunny day,” Ollie Jennings, the band’s manager, told The Journal. “We started writing a poem on the boat with Gerry Mulholland. Davy put music to it, and we had a song shortly afterwards.”
The band is currently on a tour across Ireland and the UK. They will headline at Féile an Phobail on August 7 in Belfast and play at Electric Picnic on August 30.
The Saw Doctors also have a new upcoming musical production, Shamtown, set to take the stage in Galway this November.
