The evening will be hosted by Tommy Tiernan and see special guests Mary Coughlan, Myles O’Reilly, Paula Meehan, and Sebastian Barry, among others
Dublin's National Concert Hall has announced an event to honour President Michael D. Higgins and his upcoming spoken-word record, Against All Certainty, on September 5.
The evening will include poetry and music performances to celebrate President Higgins' contribution to Irish art, culture, and society.
His original poems will serve as the centrepiece of the festivities.
Apart from his legacy as a poet and artist, the gala also wants to recognise his impactful presidency and creative spirit that serves as an inspiration to others.
"As the National Concert Hall’s Patron and long-time advocate of the arts, President Higgins has always understood the power of the arts to connect us, challenge us, and help us imagine a better future," said Maura McGrath, CEO of the National Concert Hall.
"His unwavering commitment to the arts has been an inspiration, not only in elevating Irish cultural life but also in championing creativity as an essential part of our national identity," she continued.
The celebration coincides with the arrival of President Higgins' debut spoken-word album, Against All Certainty, which will be released via Claddagh Records on the same day.
The record features 10 original poems and incorporates music by Myles O’Reilly.
Hosted by presenter Tommy Tiernan, the event will see Irish musicians Mary Coughlan, Paul Brady, and Imelda May, among others, and will feature a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, conducted by David Brophy.
Other special guests include writer Paula Meehan, former Laureate for Irish Fiction Sebastian Barry, TV presenter Ryan Tubridy, drag queen Panti Bliss, and actor and writer Olwen Fouéré.
Elsewhere, President Higgins has published four books of poetry, such as The Betrayal, The Season of Fire, and An Arid Season.
The president's artistic portfolio also includes articles written for Hot Press Magazine.
