The Jam Exerience
Matt Jam Lamont, previously one half of Tuff Jam puts out his first solo mix, and it’s a representative selection of the development of UK garage in recent years. Comprising two CDs, the first disc consists mainly of slick, sanitized R’n’B style 2 step that veers into cheesy chart fodder territory.
However, Lamont manages to save face by including Mike Dunn’s classic ‘God Made Me Phunky’, the jazzy, soulful nuances of Astrotrax’s ‘Just Gets Better’ and the sub bass roar of Julian Jonah’s mix of ‘Hold Your Head Up High’ by Boris Dlugosch. On the second disc, Lamont really lets loose, with a far more adventurous selection. There’s deep, techy vibes from Anthill Mob, weird, 80s pop style grooves courtesy of Monsta Boy, Timo Maas’ awesome mix of ‘Doom’s Night’, the hardcore referencing ‘Wake Me Up’ by JJ Louis and trippy, twisted grooves by UK garage instigator, NYC producer Todd Edwards. If you’re looking for an accurate overview of UK garage, then Lamont’s catch-all mix is for you.
