Scissor Sisters

The Scissors Sisters are back. And how! A showcase for their new album, Night Work, it opens well. ‘Skin Tight’, a ballad celebrating Shears’ six year anniversary with his partner is engaging; ‘Sex and Violence’ is a dark, electronic track, and the new single ‘Fire with Fire’ goes down a treat,wisely placed after the classic ‘Don’t Feel Like Dancing’, which gets the Olympia on its feet.
Weirdly, there’s a bit of a multi-generational thing going on, a case of ‘Take Your Mama’ out, and bring Grandma along too. That a band with three openly gay members can have Dublin’s grandparents clapping along to songs like ‘Any Which Way’ (“better take me, any which way you can”) says more about where we’re at culturally than reams of column inches in the Sunday papers.
In parts the show drags but The Scissor Sisters’ enthusiasm is hard to resist. Plus it’s a bonus to see a band that manages to entertain without needing scads of back-up dancers or costume changes. It’s been four years since the Scissor Sisters’ Ta-Dah and the world is a different, more pessimistic, and poorer place. Welcome back – we need their blend of infectious, disco funk more than ever.
