Ronan appointed new UN Ambassador
Following the footsteps of Geri Halliwell, our very own Ronan Keating joins the UN as a goodwill ambassador.
The appointment marks Keating, 28, as the first Irish person to serve in the role.
Ronan is set to endorse the work of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Minister of State for Agriculture Brendan Smith cited his involvement as a great honor. “It is a testament to the role that Ireland and its citizens have played towards combating world hunger, poverty and underdevelopment in agriculture and rural development,” he wrote in a letter to Keating.
FAO has sought out names around the world to help promote the organization’s works. The goodwill ambassadors, including American singer Dionne Warwick and Italian soccer player Roberto Baggio, have been given the goal of attracting public attention to the major issues of hunger and malnutrition facing the lives of some 850 million people all over the globe.
Keating, who has racked up a dozen Top 10 singles during his post-Boyzone solo career, has been involved with a variety of charitable organizations. Most notably, his fight against breast cancer, setting up the Marie Keating foundation in memory of his mother who battled the disease to her death in 1998.
In addition, Keating became a trade justice ambassador for Christian Aid to combat unfair trading laws after visiting Ghana last year.
