Richard Egan - .Wav Goodbye
Superb home recordings from Irish indie maverick
This is not another Jape album hot on the heels of January’s This Chemical Sea, but a beguiling collection of home recorded songs. “My friends always tell me I never release most of the stuff I do, and that is true to be honest, because I see songwriting as a gift to help with my mental health,” Egan writes by way of an introduction.
The gorgeous bug-eyed wonder that characterises Richie’s best songs is all over .Wav Goodbye. “I’m a stalker not a politician,” he sings on ‘Counting Stars in a Tunnel of Pure Light’. “That’s how I got myself into this position/ dedicated solitude.”
The fruits of Egan’s dedicated solitude are a joy to behold and a gift to the listener’s mental health. It doesn’t matter a jot about this being a low-key release, Richie and Conor O’Brien continue to be the best songwriters we’ve got right now. Listen to .Wav Goodbye and I’m sure you’ll agree…
