Review: Flynn at Forbidden Fruit
The first act to play Forbidden Fruit’s all-Irish Bulmer’s Stage on Sunday was Flynn, the broody Mullingar-raised singer-songwriter.
After spending some years honing his craft in Bristol - busking, gigging and playing open nights - Flynn moved to London.
In the process, he has evolved as an artist, transitioning from acoustic sets to more adventurous electronica-inclined indie-pop. His powerfully coarse vocal delivery, which sometimes bends into a tender falsetto, spearheads the colourful synth-laden production – bringing recent contemporaries like Jack Garnett to mind.
Flynn - known to his parents as Darren Flynn - possesses the kind of charming yet commanding stage presence that belies his relative inexperience. His debut single and most impressive track yet – ‘Red Light’ – showcased his vocal chops. It's a hugely engrossing and fiercely performed cut, especially in the flesh.
Flynn is destined, I suspect, to reach the Irish pop stratosphere. His Forbidden Fruit set has identified him as one to keep your eyes peeled for. If the breaks fall his way, the sky's the limit.
