Propeller Palms live at The Academy
Depending on when you’ve last seen Propeller Palms, you’re probably as clueless as I am as to just how many people are in the band. The official website lists five.
At Electric Picnic this year I lost count after ten (I think!)… Tonight it’s just the nine, I’m afraid, all strategically arranged on the Academy 2 stage to maximise the little space available.
Fronting the Waterford outfit is none other than former Neuro and ID member Paul Butler, who appears to be a man reinvigorated in his new role as PP’s axe-wielding orchestrator. Butler has a year or two on the rest of the crew. However, it’s this blend of ages and musical influences that shape PP’s all-encompassing live sound: U2, Van Morrison, Motown, soul and funk particularly stand out.
Helping create that sound are some of Waterford’s finest: James O’Hallaran on guitars, Solar Taxi’s Aisling Browne on backing-vocals, and Edward O’Neill on trumpet, are just three that catch the eye tonight.
A sizeable crowd from the Déise County has also travelled up, as Propeller Palms continue what has been a hectic year. Those fans are treated to takes from 2011’s All In This Together, and a cracking cover of Sly And The Family Stone’s ‘Everyday People’.
A solid nights work for the Palms.
