Pencaitland
More of the same from folksy also-rans
Pencaitland is the fourth album from Scottish tunesmiths Southern Tenant Folk Union. It sees the band once again attempt to reimagine the nu-British folk genre by adding Amerciana, bluegrass and Celtic sounds, and it’s a solid enough affair. But the harsh truth is that it doesn’t really set them apart from their peers in this already oversaturated scene. ‘An Irish Airman Forsees His Death’ (which pays homage to the WB Yeats poem of the same name) is interesting enough. But Pencaitland doesn’t do enough for me to heartily recommend it.
