Paul Mescal interviews Paul McCartney about his new album Boys of Dungeon Lane
Mescal is set to play McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopics.
Paul McCartney opens up about his new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, with Academy Award-nominated actor Paul Mescal.
Mescal, who is set to play McCartney in the upcoming Beatles biopics directed by Sam Mendes, sits down with McCartney for In Conversation, a short film released on Amazon Music.
Opening the conversation, "How do you feel about being interviewed?", Mescal asks McCartney.
"It depends if I like the person. Which is where we're running into a problem already", McCartney joked.
"No, I find if I like who I'm being interviewed by, it comes easy".
The conversation flows as McCartney discusses both the songwriting behind his 27th album and memories surrounding his early life, parents, and bandmates. 'Salesman Saint', a song from the album, was written about his parents.
"I often remember that my mom and dad had me in World War 2. I've always known that growing up, but at a certain point you go 'wow', he said.
"It occurred to me that it'd be good to just put down some stuff about them carrying on throughout whatever they had to put up with".
Mescal then mentioned his favourite song on the album, the first single, 'Days We Left Behind', which alludes to McCartney's time with John Lennon.
"The collaboration you had with them all and the relationship you had with John, it's such a full, brilliant, complicated thing", said Mescal.
"Where's your heart with all of that now?"
"Looking back on your life, I ran into this guy called John Lennon, and he was fighting life - he had a lot of trouble, his dad left home, his mom had got run over, he had a lot of trouble in there - so he was putting up a shield, so he was very witty, very biting", McCartney replied.
"When it came to writing, that kind of relationship stayed there, so on this record, I might even refer to him in my mind, as if we're still writing together".
The new album arrives on May 29, and has been previewed by 'Days We Left Behind' and his first duet with Ringo Starr, 'Home To Us'.
The Beatles - A Four-Film Cinematic Event stars: Mescal as McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. They're currently set to debut in April 2028.
