Musicians Union chief quits
Greg Boland has resigned as President of the Musicians Union of Ireland after a four-year tenure.
According to the MUI’s official Sound Post bulletin, Greg Boland's unexpected resignation is “a result of a serious disagreement within the Union over the strategy for recruiting members of the Wexford Festival orchestra to the Union.”
Boland felt strongly about the issue having helped secure the return of an Irish-based orchestra to the Festival.
Continues the article: “During his four years as President, Boland was involved in negotiations with RTÉ for the Orchestral Freelance agreement, leading discussions with IMRO as well as the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, while ensuring the setting up of the MUI website. He also led the MUI involvement in the long-running joint campaign with Irish Equity, NUJ and SIPTU against the Competition Authority preventing unions from representing freelance workers.”
