Michael Kinwanuka
London singer Michael Kiwanuka’s stock soared when he was included in the BBB’s ‘Sound of 2012’ poll last year, and went through the roof last month when he was announced the overall winner. As a result, the Sugar Club is packed tonight, with fans eager to catch the hotly-tipped singer-songwriter ahead of the release of his debut album next month.
And he doesn’t disappoint. Kiwanuka’s combination of thoughtful lyrics and honey-soaked vocals has the hushed crowd eating out of his guitar-strumming hand from the get-go. Playing with full band, tracks like the funky ‘I Don’t Know’ and fan fave ‘Home Again’ sound great and go down a treat. However it’s when the singer goes it alone that his amazing voice is showcased most effectively. ‘Bones’ and encore track ‘Lasan’ are all the more beautiful for Kiwanuka’s soulfully understated performance. A classy turn from a singer who graciously lives up to the hype.
