Live Review: Very Round Robin, Whelan's
Roesy, Old Hannah and Colm Mac Con Iomaire roll into the famous Wexford Street venue.
Three talented Irish music acts joined forces for an evening of performance Friday night in the second installment of the Very Round Robin Tour. The concept behind the tour is that it brings together three different artists who take turn playing songs and telling stories in a relaxed atmosphere.
Folk outfit Old Hannah put their own spin on Irish folk music, injecting it with a heavy dose of Americana. Playing several cuts off their latest Iron And Wood EP, the foot stomping title track and swelling ‘With You I Ride’ livened up a mostly subdued set and found the audience clapping and singing along.
Singer-songwriter Roesy, known for his heartfelt and skilfully crafted tunes, brought a number of original numbers to the mix. His contributions included ‘Wolf Counsel’ and ‘Forever All’ from his latest full-length effort, Wolf Counsel, as well as the tracks ‘Hellbent On You’ and ‘Cast Your Line’ from his extensive back catalogue.
The virtuosic violin talents of Colm Mac Con Iomaire rounded out the lineup.
Primarily known as the violinist for indie rock band The Frames, his solo work takes on a lighter, more dreamlike quality. With only the assistance of a looping pedal, he filled the venue with lush, enchanting soundscapes.
All the artists seemed delighted to be sharing a stage together and this passion could be especially felt when the three acts joined in full force on the final few songs. For all involved, the evening was certainly a jam session to remember.
