Live Report: Wunderhorse tear the roof off at Electric Picnic

The tented roof of the Electric Areana could barely contain the anticipation of the crowd waiting for Wunderhorse to step out on stage, as every step of the sound, light and wind machine check was greeted with loud cheers.

When the English quartet (intially formed as a Covid-era solo project by frontman Jacob Slater) did walk out, straight in with Midas, with the crowd singing every word louder than Jacob himself.

They set a blistering pace from the start with their signature growling grunge riffs, following up with Cathedrals and Butterflies, before Emily and Girl, both from 2024's album Midas.

The acoustic lead into latest single The Rope got a massive reaction, and the handful of as-yet unreleased tracks that were debutted were well recieved.

Frontman Jacob Slater has been chattier at other shows this writer has seen but the music — growling, grungy andd powerful — speaks for itself this evening across the too-short hour-long set.

After a rousing roof-raising rendition of Arizona, they took us down for a slow number with One for the Pigeons, before racheting it back up with Silver and a long drawling riff to lead us into July (and we sing the intro for them).

The opening bars of Teal really has the crowd going bananas, as girlfriends get hoisted on shoulders and the crowd really start to move even more thant they already were.

Just before the end, Jacob tells the techs to put the lights up — "I wanna see this crowd, Jesus ye're beautiful!" — before they close with Rain and extended guitars on the bridge, closing out the pulsating, deep-throated grunge rock performance that was marred only by the fact we could have happily sat through a whole second hour.
