Live Report: Wet Leg bring infinite summer vibes to the rainy grounds of Trinity College Dublin
English indie rock heroes Wet Leg took over Dublin city centre yesterday evening for a night of joyful dancing and out-of-this-world charisma.
Since releasing their self-titled debut in 2022, Isle of Wight band Wet Leg have been propelled to the forefront of the indie scene, thanks to their incredibly distinctive blend of witty songwriting and unbelievable melodic flair. Expanding to a five-piece for their 2025 album moisturizer, the group has been extensively touring the world, tonight marking their third Irish stop since its release.
On the misty grounds of Trinity College Dublin this Wednesday evening, Wet Leg blend perfectly into the landscape, slowly appearing through a cloud of artificial smoke, soundtracked by the intoxicating bass lines of ‘catch these fists’.
As the band jump into ‘Oh No’, Rhian Teasdale, in her all white sporty outfit, is already effortlessly cool, the wind machine in her hair and her flexed muscles perfectly underlining her rock star attitude. The wonderfully joyful and tongue-in-cheek ‘Wet Dreams’, meanwhile, seems to perfectly cut through the rain to pump the summer right back into the gig, audience more than ready to sing and dance their hearts out.
‘Supermarket’ softens the tone while keeping the party atmosphere going, Teasdale charmingly laughing through the second verse - while ‘liquidize’ blends delicate soundscapes with catchy and bouncing riffs.
‘jennifer’s body’ brings the evening into darker territories with disconcerting ease, continuous rain only highlighting the cinematic quality of the tune. ‘Being In Love’, meanwhile, arranged for the occasion with much grittier guitars than its studio version, is the perfect crowd pleaser, fun and singable without lacking any of the mid-setlist heavy quality.
It isn’t hard to guess that ‘pond song’ is a favorite of the band’s. If the instrumentalists had, until now, stayed in the background, the marvelous bass riffs of the tune seem to force them to dance their heart out to every note. The bridge’s guitar solo, performed by Teasdale on her iconic acrylic green B.C. Rich Mockingbird guitar, is even more rousing live than in its studio version.
If the singer is an absolute force to be reckoned with, Wet Leg’s brilliant instrumentalists are nothing short of the perfect accompaniment. Technically impeccable, they also balance the perfect amount of discretion, letting their frontwoman shine, with excellent stage presence on the tunes that call for it. From the second part of the gig, the self-effacing Hester Chambers and the sensational guitarist Joshua Omead Mobaraki take a more front-facing position which offers a welcomed novelty.
Elsewhere, ‘pokemon’ is an absolute delicacy of track, while ‘davina mccall’ sounds like a pure velvety dream, wonderfully catchy and exquisitely romantic. Imbuing the grounds of Trinity College with a certain magical atmosphere, the tune leaves the audience all smiles and glistening eyes.
Breaking up the tranquil section of the evening with the deliciously harsh riffs of ‘Pillow Talk’, the rest of the set-list flows like a perfect summer soundtrack – it would be difficult to point out attendees who aren’t dancing their hearts out on the bouncy bass riffs of ‘u and me at home’. The iconic tracks ‘Too Late Now’ and ‘Chaise Longue’ are also easy crowd pleasers, with their singalong-ready spoken sections and their warm instrumentals.
I can't think of a better closing duo of tracks than ‘CPR’ and the incredible ‘mangetout’. On this final tune, Teasdale truly asserts herself as one of the most captivating frontwomen of indie - charmingly calling out “what, Dublin?” before the crowd sings back “get lost forever!” and kneeling in front of the wind machine on the evening’s ultimate bridge, there is no doubt that the singer and the rest of her fantastic band are having the absolute time of their lives on stage. And looking up at them from the grounds of Trinity College tonight, so did we.
