Two strong female voices take centre stage at Whelan’s for a captivating performance.
Dublin based performer/producer Erica Cody opens the show and warms the crowd up with a number of soulful tunes, including her debut single 'Addicted', which she released back in February. The young singer is clearly relishing the fact that she’s supporting Mahalia on her current tour throughout Ireland.
After a short break, the final soundcheck leads smoothly into the opening song from the headline act. Mahalia's bassist, Charly, plays a few bars, before the singer's voice fills the room, followed by her delightful smile a few seconds later. Mahalia's contagious glow immediately spreads throughout the room and by the third song, 'Silly Girl', the ice between performer and audience is firmly broken. The sold out crowd responds warmly as Mahalia throws out one passionate song after the next. During the intervals, she finds herself being deliberately chatting and joking with the crowd, taking on a persona that's as relaxed as it professional.
Mahalia’s band also add to the professionalism on stage. She needs only a bass guitar, a guitar and two synths to back up her beautiful vocals. And while the band is kept tight throughout the set, the highlight of the night comes with the singer’s acappella version of ‘Back Up Plan’, during which she alternately raps the verses and sings the chorus; the crowd happily chimes in where they can.
'I really love playing in Ireland 'cause it's a whole different kind of buzz here' she tells us after the concert. 'People aren't scared to sing, people aren't scared to be loud and chat with me and that makes the whole show fun'.
We’re glad you enjoyed yourself Mahalia – and we hope to see you again soon.
