Liars - Mess
The Brooklynites give the jams a good old kicking
Liars leader Angus Andrew is perhaps best-known for inspiring the classic Yeah Yeah Yeahs love song ‘Maps’. While Liars have never quite emulated the global success of Angus’ ex- Karen O and her world famous band, they’ve been a riveting proposition,
not afraid to get their hands dirty with just about anything and everything.
Their seventh studio album kicks off with ‘Mask Maker,’ which sounds like a drunk Iggy Pop stuck in a lift with 2 Many DJs. Andrew drawls like a man possessed, while his fellow Liars create a claustrophobic and deranged racket.
Not surprisingly, ‘Boyzone’ doesn’t sound like any kind of tribute to the Dublin boy band. MESS triumphantly lives up to its title and it’s a beautiful one. Liars will either delight or appall the listener. It certainly won’t leave anyone unmoved.
