Kíla have been announced as the headliner of Gig for Gaza on Sunday, October 25. The fundraiser will take place at McHugh's in Drogheda, with all proceeds going to Médecins Sans Frontières, a.k.a. Doctors Without Borders, to support their work in the Gaza Strip.
The event is scheduled for Sunday of the Bank Holiday weekend at 7 p.m. Kíla will be joined by musicians Tara Dignam, Disko Volante, and SJ McArdle, as well as comedians Fred Cooke and Joe Rooney.
Kíla are a fusion band known for blending Irish folk music and Gaeilge with rock and other genres. Their music has featured on several film soundtracks, including The Secret of Kells and Arracht, for which they won an IFTA Award.
Joe Rooney, host of the event, is best known for his role as Father Damo on Father Ted while Fred Cooke is a familiar name from Republic of Telly and as MC on The Tommy Tiernan Show.
Tara Dignam is a BIMM student who composes and performs alternative folk music as Gaeilge. Disko Volante are a funk-rock trio from Drogheda. SJ McArdle is an established folk musician and songwriter who has been a member of Kern, lived in Nashville, and is now in a band called Long Woman's Grave.
Al's Tees, a local T-Shirt printing brand, will also be at Gig for Gaza raising money for the cause.
“This is THE gig of the year for Drogheda", said Ellen O'Reilly of Deadly Craic Events, who are organising the fundraiser. "We wanted to put together a night that people would genuinely be excited to come to, while raising as much as possible for a great cause.
“Not only do we have the incredible Kíla playing, but we also have some of the very best local musicians donating their time and talent. Fred Cooke and Joe Rooney will make sure that everyone has a great night too.
“Médecins Sans Frontières is doing incredible work across hospitals, field hospitals, clinics and medical points in Gaza. They provide essential care amid severe pressure on the territory’s health system and amongst the worst imaginable conditions.”
Tickets to the gig are available here.
