Indians: Somewhere Else
Premature debut from Denmark dreampopper...
Whenever the illustrious label 4AD sign someone new, you assume it will make for interesting listening. Their latest protégé is Indians, the musical alter ego of Copenhagen’s Søren Løkke Juu – who apparently played his first live show last April. Young Juu has been keeping himself busy honing his stagecraft, opening for the likes of Dan Deacon and Perfume Genius.
Musically, Juu is closest to the haunting electronica of the latter, but sadly without the verve or personality. The ideas and execution are occasionally excellent, but his singing voice will undoubtedly be filed under ‘acquired taste’ by most people.
Maybe the whole project has been too rushed: in short, Indians sounds like someone who wasn’t ready to release a debut album.
