Minor Victories album review.
INDIE SUPERGROUP DELIVERS THE GOODS
Some things sound too good to be true. On paper, Minor Victories are the most beguiling supergroup in the world, bar none.
And hallelujah! – Rachel Goswell of Slowdive, Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai and Justin Lockey of Editors do not disappoint with what is a stunning eponymous debut.
From the moment Rachel starts singing on ‘Give Up The Ghost’ to the closing track ‘Higher Hopes’, Minor Victories create an enthralling swirl of enchanting melodies and beautifully structured noise. But they also leave room for soft slow burners like the gorgeous ’Folk Arp’. The poignant ‘Scattered Ashes (Song For Richard)’ is a track of the year contender, while ‘Cogs’ is classic shoegaze heaven. Mark Kozelek of Sun Kil Moon and James Graham of The Twilight Sad also pitch in with brilliant cameos.
They are doing some limited touring on the back of this release, and have already appeared at Castlepalooza. Hopefully, we’ll be hearing plenty more from Minor Victories.
