Hot shots 2004: Fair Verona
For anyone who cut their musical teeth on the classic late ’80s days of alternative US rock, Fair Verona’s recent six track demo will have come as both a blast from the past and something refreshingly different.
Stemming from a childhood friendship, the Co Tipperary trio took their influence from the likes of The Breeders and Throwing Muses, picked up some instruments and made a start on learning to play them. Fast forward a few years and the results are starting to pay dividends. Combining punky instrumentation with sweet harmonies and melodies, the band offer both accessibility and depth. Beneath the surface, however, lies the darker element of Aoife Cleary’s lyrics, giving gutsy pop tunes such as ‘Pretty Shaken’ and ‘Overdone’ an added bite.
With repeated visits to the capital, as well as regional dates, building up an audience, Fair Verona are poised to join the growing ranks of quality Irish punk rockers.
