Here's How You Can Help Calais Refugees if You're Leaving Electric Picnic Today
If you're heading home from Electric Picnic this afternoon, you can do your bit for refugees in Calais by leaving your tent behind. The "Tents for Calais" initiative will ensure that your old tents will be put to good use by sending them to the under-resourced refugee camp in northern France.
This is the first year that this has been done at Electric Picnic and previous years have seen thousands of tents going straight to landfill sites. Roisin Ni Ghairbhith, who organised the initiative, has said that drop-off points can be found near the Global Green or at any of the separate campsites near the recycling areas.
The camp in Calais, nicknamed "The Jungle", is home to some 7,000 refugees who come from conflict-affected areas all over the world, but mainly from Syria. It is known for poor standards of housing, crime and substance abuse, and incidents of discrimination against immigrants.
